Business Information
The group's principal activity is organized into two business segments: specialties & intermediates (s&i) and basic chemicals & polymers (bc&p). The s&i segment produces a broad range of products, including specialty polyolefins used in wire and cable insulation and jacketing; surfactants for industrial cleaners; catalysts for the manufacture of polymers, etc. The bc&p segment converts various hydrocarbon feedstocks, principally liquefied petroleum gases and naphtha, into the basic building-block chemicals ethylene and propylene, which are in turn converted to polyethylene, polypropylene and ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol. This segment provides ethylene, propylene, ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol and various other derivatives to the s&i segment. On Feb 6, 2001, the group merged with a subsidiary of the dow chemical company (dow). Specialties & intermediates accounted for 68% of 2000 revenues and basic chemicals and polymers, 32%.
