The group's principal activities are that of a commercial bank, providing banking services through its wholly owned subsidiary, banco santander Puerto Rico. The group operates in three segments: retail banking, mortgage banking and investments. Retail banking segment is composed principally of branch-based banking, including middle market, commercial, construction, agricultural, leasing, consumer and other branch-based and specialized divisions. Mortgage banking involves the origination and servicing of residential mortgage loans. The investment segment handles the investment portfolio comprised mostly of government securities, mortgage backed securities and interest bearing deposits as well as all trading and derivative activities. The group is also engaged in insurance activities. The group operates through a network of 66 branches in Puerto Rico and 139 ATMs. In 2003, the group acquired santander securities corporation.
