The group's principal activity is to provide contract drilling and related services to oil & gas exploration and production companies through the use of mobile offshore and land-based drilling rigs in both U.S. offshore and international land and offshore markets. The group operates a global fleet of 278 rigs, including two ultra-deepwater drillships, 12 semi-submersible rigs, 28 jackup rigs, 18 tender-assisted, barge and platform rigs and 218 land-based drilling and workover rigs. The group functions through five principal reporting segments including eastern hemisphere, western hemisphere, U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Latin America Land, and E&P services. The group's operations are conducted in many of the most active oil and natural gas basins of the world, including South America, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and the Caspian Sea. In the fiscal year 2005, out of the total revenue eastern hemisphere accounted for $596.9 million, western hemisphere accounted for $482.4 million, U.S. Gulf of Mexico accounted for $266.0 million, Latin America Land accounted for $495.2 million, E&P services accounted for $192.4 million, and corporate & other accounted for $ 0.4 million. In December 2005, the group acquired an additional 40% interest in their joint venture companies that manage group's Angolan operations from their partner, the National Oil Company of Angola, for $170.9 million.
