The group's principal activity is the retail distribution of imported decorative home furnishings, gifts and related items. The retail operations of the group consist of three chains of retail stores operating under the names pier 1 imports, the pier and cargokids. The products offered by the group include a wide variety of furniture, decorative home furnishings, dining and kitchen goods, bath and bedding accessories and other specialty items for the home. The group imports merchandise from over 40 different countries including Italy, Malaysia, Brazil, Mexico, China, the Philippines and Indonesia. As at 29-May-2004, the group operated 1,201 retail stores located in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and Mexico.
