The group's principal activity is to provide wholesale power supply on a non-profit basis to its twelve consumer-owned electric distribution cooperatives and to tec trading inc. The twelve consumer-owned distribution co-operatives are termed as class a members and tec trading, inc. Is a class b member. The class a members sell electric service to consumers in 70 counties throughout Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and parts of west Virginia. Tec trading inc sells power in the market, manages the member distribution cooperatives exposure to changes in fuel prices and makes use of other power-related trading opportunities, which may become available in the market. During 2003, the group served more than 479,000 retail electric consumers representing a total population of approximately 1.2 million people.
