The group's principal activity is to operate through three segments, insurance, investment management services and municipal services. The operations are conducted through its wholly owned subsidiary, mbia insurance corporation. The insurance segment provides an unconditional and irrevocable guarantee of the payment of principal and interest on insured obligations when due. The investment management services segment provides an array of products and services to the public and not-for-profit sectors. These include local government investment pools, investment agreements and discretionary and non-discretionary portfolio management services. The municipal services segment provides revenue enhancement services and products to public-sector clients nationwide.
