The group's principal activity is to provide general acute care health services in non-urban communities. The acute care hospitals offer medical and surgical services, including inpatient care, intensive and cardiac care, diagnostic services and emergency services. The group also provides outpatient services such as one-day surgery, laboratory, X-ray, respiratory therapy, cardiology and physical therapy. Specialty services such as oncology, radiation therapy, ct scanning, mri imaging, lithotripsy and full-service obstetrics are provided at certain of its hospitals. The group's two psychiatric-only hospitals focus mainly on child/adolescent intensive residential treatment programs. At 30-Sep-2003, the group operated 47 general acute care hospitals with a total of 6,337 licensed beds and two psychiatric-only hospitals with a total of 142 licensed beds. On 01-Nov-2003, the group acquired 5 non-urban hospitals from subsidiaries of tenet healthcare corporation.
