The group's principal activities are to develop and produce natural products from microalgae. Microalgae are a diverse group of microscopic plants that have a wide range of physiological and biochemical characteristics and contain high levels of natural protein, amino acids, vitamins, pigments and enzymes. The products of the group include spirulina pacifica, natural astaxanthin and phycobiliproteins. Spirulina pacifica provides a vegetable-based, highly absorbable source of protein, natural beta-carotene, mixed carotenoids, b vitamins, gamma linolenic acid, essential amino acids and other phytonutrients. Natural astaxanthin is used in the aquaculture market primarily to impart a pink to red color to the flesh of commercially raised fish and shrimp. Phycobiliprotein products are used in medical and biotechnology research industries.
