The group's principal activity is to develop, manufacture and market advanced technical ceramic products for defense, industrial, consumer, microwave communications and automotive applications. Its trademarks include ceralloy(R), ceradyne(R) and CD(r). The group operates in three segments each of which has its own manufacturing facilities & administration functions. Advanced technical ceramics can withstand high temperatures and have a high electrical insulation capability. It operates through three divisions: advanced ceramic operations produces armor and orthodontic products and components for semiconductor equipment; semicon associates conducts cathode development and production; thermo materials division produces fused silica products, including missile radomes. The products are sold to contractors and original equipment manufacturers. On 15-May-2004, the group acquired quest technology lp. On 26-Aug-2004, the group acquired esk ceramics gmbh & co.
