The group's principal activities are to provide pharmaceutical services in the United States through its wholly-owned indirect subsidiary, caremark inc. These services are referred to as pharmacy benefit management services and involve the design and administration of programs aimed at reducing the costs and improving the safety, effectiveness and convenience of prescription drug use. The group dispenses prescription drugs to customers through a network of about 55,000 retail pharmacies and automated mail service pharmacies located in phoenix, Arizona, westin, Florida, mount prospect, Illinois, san antonio and Texas. The customers of the group include sponsors of health benefit plans such as employers, insurance companies, unions, government employee groups and managed care organizations and other individuals. On 24-Mar-2004, the group acquired advancepcs.
