The group's principal activity focuses on mining and refining of bauxite ores to produce alumina for the aluminium and alumina chemicals industries. It owns 40% of alcoa world alumina & chemicals (awac), a partnership with alcoa. Awac has interests in bauxite mining, alumina refining, alumina-based chemicals and two operating aluminium smelters. Awac has a global network of mines, refineries and smelters in Australia, guinea, suriname, jamaica, Brazil, Spain and the United States.
