Wolfgang Hanrieder is a Managing Director focused on European technology opportunities in the communications technology and services, software and material sciences sectors. He co-heads the firm's technology investment activities in Europe and is based in London.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Dr. Hanrieder was a Managing Partner at Star Ventures Management, an international venture capital firm with US$1 billion under management. While working for Star Ventures, Dr. Hanrieder held several Board seats in U.S. and German companies, and since 1997 oversaw more than 20 deals that were transacted in the IT and medical sectors. Among the companies in which he invested were Omnia and Softcom, both of which were subsequently acquired by large NASDAQ-listed corporations, returning extraordinary multiples to the fund. Dr. Hanrieder started his career in 1985 with Siemens AG, and later as a Director oversaw strategic projects and led departments targeted on new business opportunities in various high-tech industry sectors. Before joining Star, Dr. Hanrieder moved with his family to Boston, where he worked for Siemens-Nixdorf Information Systems AG, reporting to the company’s Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Hanrieder was born and educated in Germany. In addition to his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics, which he received from the Technical University Munich, Germany, he is a Sloan Fellow and holds an Executive M.B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.
