William L. Johnson has been the Ruben and Donna Mettler Professor of Materials Science at Caltech since 1988 and a member of the Caltech faculty since 1977. He received his B.A. in physics from Hamilton College and his Ph.D. in applied physics from Caltech in 1974. He spent two years at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center (1975-77). He received a Von Humbolt Distinguished Scientist Fellowship and was a Visiting Professor at the University of Gottingen, Germany in 1983 and again in 1988. He is the 1995 recipient of the TMS/AIME Hume Rothery Award for his experimental work on crystal to glass transformations. Professor Johnson received the MRS Gold Medal in 1999 for his work on development of bulk metallic glasses. He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2000. He is a Fellow of ASM International and was recently elected as a Fellow of TMS. Professor Johnson is author or co-author of over 380 publications in the scientific literature, and is an inventor on over 20 U.S. Patents. He has held numerous consulting positions for the Department of Energy, NASA, and corporations. He currently serves as the Vice Chairman for Technology for Liquid Metals Technology Corporation, a company devoted to the commercialization of bulk metallic glasses. |
