William R. Pomierski is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. He is a member of the Firm's Tax Department, along with the Firm's Financial Products Group, Energy Group and Executive Compensation Group. Bill focuses his practice on the taxation of financial products and executive compensation matters. He advises clients on the federal income tax implications of a variety of domestic, cross-border, and global financial products and related transactions. Bill has worked extensively with both public and private companies, hedge funds, trading firms, and financial institutions in connection with a wide range of financial product issues and executive compensation programs.
His experience in financial product issues has an emphasis on the use of derivatives with respect to energy and agricultural commodities, interest rate and equity derivatives, hedging and straddle issues, constructive sales and constructive ownership transactions, mark-to-market issues, asset-backed securities offerings, domestic and international securities lending, short sales and repo transactions, debt offerings and hybrid securities, foreign currency transactions, equipment leasing, and international financial transactions.
Bill is a frequent speaker on financial product issues, and has jointly developed and conducts training courses on the taxation of financial products and foreign currency transactions. He and Andrea Kramer were the Co-Editors in Chief of CCH's quarterly Journal of Taxation of Financial Products from 2000 through 2005, and he is currently the New Developments columnist for the Journal of Taxation of Financial Products. He also frequently writes about various financial product tax matters, with articles having been published in the International Tax Review, the NYU Annual Institute on Federal Taxation, BNA's Financial Products Reporter, Taxes Magazine, and Derivatives Quarterly, to name a few. Bill was named an Illinois Super Lawyer in tax area by Law & Politics.
He was a member of the University of Illinois Law Review.
