William N. Cantrell became President of Peoples Gas in June 1997, after serving for seven months as the leader of the transition team for the acquisition of Peoples Gas by TECO Energy.
He joined Tampa Electric in 1975 and held engineering and management positions in the company's Power Plant Engineering, Generation Planning and Environmental Planning areas before becoming assistant director in Budgets in 1984. Cantrell then served as director of Fuels and was named Vice President Regulatory Affairs in November 1987, and in April 1991, named Vice President-Energy Resources Planning.
He became vice president-Energy Supply of Tampa Electric in 1994 and assumed additional responsibility for engineering, operations, maintenance, and construction for the company's power production facilities, including environmental matters and fuel procurement. Cantrell also served as President of Tampa Electric from September 2003 to October 2004.
He received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and his master's degree in business administration from The University of Tampa.
Cantrell has served on the board of The Spring of Tampa Bay - a shelter for battered families- for many years and has organized and run an annual tennis tournament to benefit the shelter for 10 years.
He is currently a trustee of The University of Tampa and is on the Boards of the American Gas Association, Florida Natural Gas Association, Southern Gas Association, Heritage Propane, The Florida Orchestra and Enterprise Florida.
Cantrell is a registered professional engineer in Florida and is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Florida Engineering Society. He is a member of the 1991 Leadership Tampa class and a United Way Keel Club member.
He is married and has two children.
