William J. Murphy, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Microbiology and Immunology department at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno. His research is focused on examining means to improve the efficacy of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in cancer and other diseases. In addition, his laboratory has been examining BMT as a means to understand the immune system and the process of aging as well as on improving immune resistance to opportunistic infections that can arise after a transplant. Dr. Murphy is also the Director of Basic Research of the newly established Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas and is a Guest Researcher at the National Cancer Institute, where he also maintains a laboratory.
Dr. Murphy earned his B.S. in Biology at Rutgers University followed by his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1989.
