William D. Young is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. He has served as our Chief Executive Officer since November 1999 and has served as the Chairman of the Board since May 1999. From March 1997 to October 1999 Mr. Young was Chief Operating Officer at Genentech Inc. a biotechnology company. As COO at Genentech Mr. Young was responsible for all of the company's development operations and commercial functions. Mr. Young joined Genentech in 1980 as Director of Manufacturing and Process Sciences and held various executive positions prior to becoming COO. Prior to joining Genentech Mr. Young was employed by Eli Lilly and Company for 14 years. Mr. Young is a member of the board of directors of Biogen IDEC and Theravance Inc. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University his MBA from Indiana University and an honorary doctorate in engineering from Purdue University. Mr. Young was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993 for his contributions to biotechnology. |
