William C. France, a director since 1958, has served as Chairman of the Board since 1987. Mr. France also served as Chief Executive Officer from 1981-2003.
Bill France serves as Chairman of the Board of International Speedway Corporation (ISC), a motorsports entertainment company based in Daytona Beach, Fl.
Prior to 2003, France served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer, a title he held since 1981. He has been featured in numerous national publications, including Forbes, Fortune and the New York Times.
France also served as president of National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) for 28 years before stepping down in November, 2000. He took over the reigns of NASCAR on January 10, 1972, becoming only the second president of the world's largest auto racing sanctioning body.
France grew up in the formative years of stock car racing, living and learning every detail of the sport from his own experiences, from his father Bill France, Sr., the founder and first president of NASCAR, and from the dedicated people who turned a rough and tumble sport into one of the most popular sports in the United States.
Born in Washington, D.C., France was less than two when his parents moved to Daytona Beach, Fla. He attended Seabreeze High School where he played basketball and later attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. He served two years in the United States Navy and turned to a full-time career in racing when his service stint ended.
France's family plays a major role in the operation of NASCAR and ISC. His wife, the former Betty Jane Zachary, serves as assistant secretary for NASCAR, while daughter Lesa France Kennedy serves on both the ISC Board of Directors as well as the NASCAR Board, and is President of ISC. His son Brian is Chairman and CEO for NASCAR and serves on the board of ISC. Younger brother Jim serves as Vice Chairman and CEO for ISC and is executive vice president and secretary for NASCAR. |
