William C. Bullitt has been a partner in the firm since 1979 and practices in the firm’s Private Client Group.
Areas of Concentration. Bill’s practice encompasses estate planning and administration, litigation of estate and trust related disputes and the formation, operation, merger and dissolution of charitable corporations and foundations. In the estate planning area, Bill has substantial experience working with the owners of closely-held businesses in planning for corporate succession in complex family circumstances. This experience covers a range of manufacturing, service and real estate businesses. In his representation of individuals, he has worked closely with landowners in planning for the disposition of their holdings, with and without conservation easements. In the administration and litigation of estate related matters, he has advised fiduciaries and beneficiaries on significant environmental problems, assisted in the settlement of substantial environmental claims asserted by government regulatory agencies and has advised fiduciaries and beneficiaries on the restructuring of investment assets held by estates and trusts. Bill has helped numerous clients create foundations (both public and private) and has advised on legal issues regarding their operation and grant-making programs. He has advised major public charities in the Philadelphia area on the classification and use of endowment funds and other assets committed to charitable uses, the merger of such institutions, and the disposition of such assets in court-supervised proceedings.
In General. Bill graduated from Harvard University in 1968 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, magna cum laude, in 1971. While in law school, he received the Edwin R. Keedy Cup for his performance in a moot court competition, and the G. Newton Greene Memorial Prize (Torts). Bill has served as a speaker or a panelist in numerous presentations to the Probate and Trust Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association. For two years he served as a member of its Executive Committee and has served as chair of the section’s Legislative Committee. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and has been named to The Best Lawyers in Trust & Estates Law.
Bill is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations. He is also very active in civic affairs, having served on numerous boards of charitable organizations, including Pennsylvania Hospital, where he chaired the Finance Committee, and The Philadelphia Foundation, where he was a member of the Finance and Investment Committee. He was instrumental in the creation of the First Hospital Foundation and served as the first president of its Board of Directors. He is a director of the Seybert Institution (where he has served as president since 1988). He is a past president of Episcopal Community Services of the Diocese of Pennsylvania and served for 15 years as Chancellor of the Diocese. |
