Beckner joined BB&T in 1982 and in the same year completed the BB&T Management Development Program. The following year he was named business services officer in Morehead City N.C. In 1985 he was named city executive in Havelock N.C. and in 1996 business services manager in Greenville N.C. He was named city executive in Hickory N.C. in 1989 and in 1995 city executive in Wilmington N.C. He was named as the Valley regional president in July of 2000.
