Wayne W. Murdy was elected chairman of Newmont Mining Corporation effective Jan. 1, 2002. He also served as chief executive officer from January 2001 to July 1, 2007. Newmont is headquartered in Denver, Colo., and is a major gold producer with a market capitalization at year-end 2006 of $20 billion, total assets in excess of $15 billion on five continents, and 15,000 employees worldwide. Mr. Murdy retired as chairman of Newmont on 12/31/07 and retired as CEO of Newmont on 6/30/07.
Mr. Murdy is a director of Qwest Communications International Inc. He is a member of the advisory council for Colorado School of Mines, the board of Trustees of the Denver Art Museum, the University of Denver Daniels College of Business Executive Advisory Board, the Manufacturing Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce, a board member of the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative of the World Economic Forum, and a trustee of The Catholic Foundation of Northern Colorado. He is also a past chairman of the International Council on Mining and Metals, and a director of the National Mining Association.
Prior to joining Newmont in 1992, Mr. Murdy spent 15 years in senior financial positions in the oil and gas industry, first with Getty Oil Company and later with Apache Corporation. He began his business career in public accounting. A graduate of California State University at Long Beach, he has a Bachelor of Science in business administration and is a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Murdy was recognized as a distinguished graduate of California State University at Long Beach in 2005. He was the 2006 recipient of the Charles F. Rand Gold Medal of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, and was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering by the Colorado School of Mines in 2007. He is also the 2007 recipient of the University of Denver International Bridge Builders Award.
Wayne and Diana Murdy have been married 38 years and have four children and six grandchildren. |
