Walter Hellerstein, the Francis Shackelford Professor of Taxation at the University of Georgia Law School, is the nation's preeminent academic authority on state and local tax law and is currently counsel to Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan LLP. He is co-author with his late father of both the leading treatise (State Taxation) and the leading casebook (State and Local Taxation) in the state tax field. He has also practiced extensively in the state tax arena, having been involved in numerous cases before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Hellerstein was counsel to Morrison & Foerster from 1986 to 1996 and a partner at Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan from 1996 to 1998, and counsel to KPMG from 1999 to 2004. Before joining the Georgia faculty, Mr. Hellerstein taught at the University of Chicago Law School. Mr. Hellerstein is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Chicago Law School.
