A well-known molecular biologist and a General Partner of BioVentures Investors, Dr. Walter Gilbert has had a long track record of experience in the biotechnology industry. On top of his forty year academic career at Harvard University, Dr. Gilbert was a Co-Founder and CEO of Biogen, Inc., a co-Founder of Myriad Genetics, Inc. and is currently Vice-Chairman of Myriad's Board of Directors. Dr. Gilbert is also Chairman of the Board of Directors and co-Founder of Paratek Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pintex Pharmaceuticals; a co-Founder and a Director of Memory Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and a Director of Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc.Dr. Gilbert was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of DNA sequencing in 1980. He has held professorships at Harvard University in the Departments of Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry, and Biology, and since 1985, in Molecular and Cellular Biology. He received the New England Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Institute of American Entrepreneurs in 1991 and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, and a recipient of numerous other awards and honorary degrees for his work in molecular biology.
