Vincent Newsome Biography :

Vincent Newsome, in his 4th year as the Ravens' assistant director of pro personnel, works closely with George Kokinis in evaluating NFL free agent talent...Vincent assists Kokinis by scouting both upcoming Ravens opponents as well as talent in NFL Europe and the CFL...Newsome conducts free agent workouts during the season and assists Eric DeCosta by evaluating some college talent leading up to NFL Draft Weekend.

Newsome spent 3 years (1993-95) as a special assignment scout evaluating skill positions nationally...Over the next 7 years (1996-2002), Vincent concentrated on talent in the West, the last 3 of those seasons were spent as the Ravens' western college supervisor, covering players from California to Wisconsin. Over the years, key acquisitions from Newsome's area have had success and are recognized league-wide...They include All-Pros CB Chris McAlister, TE Todd Heap, T Jonathan Ogden, and former Ravens RB Priest Holmes, along with starters and major contributors, such as 2003 Defensive Rookie of the Year LB Terrell Suggs, QB Kyle Boller and G Edwin Mulitalo.

A former NFL standout DB for the Rams and Browns, Vincent joined the Cleveland Browns' personnel department after retiring from the NFL in the spring of '93...Newsome had been a valuable "Plan B" acquisition for the Browns prior to the '91 campaign.

Newsome played with Cleveland for 2 years prior to his retirement...He totaled 233 tackles for the Browns, leading the defense in '91 with 127 stops...With the Rams, Newsome led the team in tackles each of his last 2 seasons and 3 times in his last 5 years...His 10-year career totals include 763 tackles (526 solo), 4 sacks and 62 PD...Vincent grabbed 17 INTs in his career and had 7 FFs and 9 FRs...He originally was a 4th-round selection by the Rams in 1983...A former Ed Block Courage Award recipient (1989), Vincent started 7 of his 10 years in the league and was a Pro Bowl alternate behind Ronnie Lott in 1986...In 1985, he was named both the Rams' Special Teams Player of the Year and a Sports Illustrated All-Pro as a safety.

Newsome earned honorable mention All-America honors as a senior for the Washington Huskies...He led the secondary with 69 tackles and recorded 4 INTs...Vincent was president of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Washington and majored in psychology.

Born in Braintree, England, Vincent attended Vacaville (CA) HS, where he was a 3-sport athlete (football, basketball and track)...He held the nation's 2nd-best time in hurdles (36.3) as a senior, and had a personal best time of 48.0 in the quarter mile...Vincent and his wife, Tasha, have 3 daughters, Candace, Emerald and Victoria, and reside in Clarksville, MD.
