Vance Joseph enters his third season in San Francisco and second as secondary coach with the 49ers after being named the secondary assistant on February 17, 2005. He shares the secondary duties with Johnnie Lynn. In 2006, Joseph helped the secondary make significant improvements over the course of the season. Veteran leader CB Walt Harris was a new and vital addition while leading the team with eight interceptions to rank tops in the NFC and third in the NFL. Harris earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for November and played in his first career Pro Bowl. On the left side, CB Shawntae Spencer led the secondary with 74 tackles, two sacks and one interception. At the safety position, Joseph was instrumental in positioning two new faces, SS Mark Roman and FS Keith Lewis, into the starting lineup as effective, hard-hitting defenders. Joseph joined San Francisco after spending 2004 as the defensive backs coach at Bowling Green State University. He joined Bowling Green’s staff after working in the same capacity at his alma mater, the University of Colorado, for two seasons (2002-03). Joseph also had a brief stint as the secondary coach at Wyoming (2002). He cut his coaching teeth as a graduate assistant for the Buffaloes (1999-01).
Joseph lettered three times during his five-year (1990-94) collegiate career at Colorado as a quarterback. Joseph was a true freshman who saw action on Colorado’s 1990 National Championship team.
Joseph signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets in 1995 where he made the transition from quarterback to defensive back. He played 17 NFL games with the Jets and Indianapolis Colts over the course of two seasons. Joseph finished his career with two interceptions. Born and raised in Marrero, LA, Joseph received a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1994 from Colorado. |
