Tomoki (Tom) Tanida* is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and concentrates his practice on patent matters, including all aspects of patent procurement with a special emphasis on semiconductor electronics and computer-related inventions.
Prior to joining the Firm, Tom worked as a registered patent attorney in Japan. He has extensive experience with patent and trademark prosecution for Japanese and international clients before the Japanese Patent Office. In relation to his prosecution practice, he has counseled clients on all aspects of intellectual property law, including copyright and unfair competition matters. He has also assisted clients on Japanese and international patent and trademark litigation.
In addition to his international IP practice, Tom has translated publications for U.S. and European lawyers to introduce the development of IP of their countries to Japanese clients and practitioners. His works include, "Determining Obviousness of Business Methods in e-Commerce Patent Applications," Intellectual Property Management , Vol. 51, No. 5, May 2001, "Development of European Trademarks," Patent , June 1996 and "New Trademark System in EU-Community Trademark," Patent , March 1996.
To date, he has received bachelor degrees in law, electrical engineering and chemistry.
Tom is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Japanese Patent Office. He is also admitted to practice in the state of New York. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Japanese Patent Attorneys Association.
Tom is fluent in Japanese.
