Tommy J. Payne is executive vice president - external relations of Reynolds American Inc. He is also executive vice president - external relations of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of Reynolds American, which manufactures and markets about one-third of the cigarettes sold in the United States.
Payne joined the Washington, D.C. office of Reynolds Tobacco in 1988.
In 1999, Payne assumed his current position at Reynolds Tobacco. He served as executive vice president - external relations of Reynolds Tobacco's parent company, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, Inc (RJR) from July 1999 to July 2004. RJR became a subsidiary of Reynolds American in July 2004.
Payne oversees the company's communications, government relations, corporate and community affairs programs.
Payne serves on the boards of trustees of Winston-Salem State University and the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art, the North Carolina Community Colleges Foundation Board of Advisors and the board of directors of the R. J. Reynolds Foundation. A native of Greenville, N.C., Payne earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from East Carolina University and a law degree from Wake Forest University.
