Powell joined WREG in July, 2003. Previously, Tom worked as an anchor and general assignment reporter for KSFY, the ABC affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While at KSFY, he reported from the wild fires in Deadwood, traveled the state covering a highly contested U.S. Senate race, and was awarded the Associated Press Award for Best Reporting. Since joining News Channel 3, Tom has been involved in the station's Emmy Award winning coverage. He reported the aftermath of the windstorm of 2003 dubbed Hurricane Elvis, filed stories during the tense hostage situation at Dyersburg Community College, and helped develop the series; Crime Where You Live, and To Catch a Fugitive. Tom is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he received awards and scholarships for excellence in news writing. He also studied Spanish at CEGRI University in Granada, Spain. |
