Dr. Li is a pioneer in optical communications and a past president of the Optical Society of America. He and his research teams have advanced lightwave technologies and systems, set records in information transmission, and seen much of their work deployed in telecommunications networks worldwide. He championed the introduction of wavelength multiplexing technology into AT&T's network. Already, this technology has generated billions of dollars in savings on AT&T's current network upgrade.
Among numerous awards Dr. Li has received are the IEEE 1975 W. R. G. Baker Prize, the IEEE 1979 David Sarnoff Award, and the OSA/IEEE 1995 John Tyndall Award. He was named an honorary professor at nine universities in China and was granted an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Dr. Li has been active in various professional societies, including IEEE/LEOS, OSA and AIP, and served as the 1995 President of the Optical Society of America. He holds a Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. |
