Tim Boyle is the president and chief executive officer of Columbia Sportswear Company®, one of the largest outerwear brands in the world and the leading seller of skiwear in the United States as well as the parent company for Sorel (acquired 2000) and Mountain Hardwear (acquired 2003). Named Columbia’s president and CEO in 1989, Tim oversees operations of the active outdoor apparel and footwear company from its Portland, Oregon headquarters.
Tim also co-stars with his mother, Columbia chairwoman Gert Boyle, in the company’s humorous, award-winning advertising campaign, portraying the annoyed but compliant son of a demanding, perfectionist mother. This campaign earned Columbia the coveted Marketing Innovation award at the 1997 Super Show, an international sporting goods and apparel show.
Tim’s career with Columbia Sportswear began in 1970 while he was a senior at the University of Oregon. His father, who had been running the company since 1964, died suddenly of a heart attack. Determined to continue the aggressive expansion her husband had initiated, Gert quickly enlisted Tim’s help, which has proven to be a dynamic pairing and a successful partnership.
The company went public in March 1998, and in 2004 reported overall sales of nearly $1.1 billion. In 1992, Tim and his mother were co-recipients of Inc. Magazine’s Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year award. The award recognizes top entrepreneurs, who have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment to their business and communities. In March 2001, Tim received the trendsetter of the year Award from the University of Oregon’s Charles H. Lundquist College of Business.
An alumnus of Portland, Oregon’s Jesuit High School (1967) and the University of Oregon (1971, B.S. Journalism), Tim provides business guidance as a board member of Widmer Brothers Brewing Company and Northwest Natural. He is also a board member of Oregon Trout and a trustee of Reed College, Crater Lake National Park Trust, and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of America.
