Timothy M. Swager is a recent Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the head of the Department of Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which is presently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the top Chemistry Department in the United States. In addition, he previously served as the Associate Director of the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies. Swager is recognized for his research and leadership in several fields of materials and organic chemistry. His innovative breakthroughs include using polymer-based sensors to detect land mines and improvised explosive devices as well as to create a dye which helps to detect spots in the brain which are symptomatic of early Alzheimer's disease. In 2007, Swager won MIT's Lemelson Prize.
