As president and chief executive officer Tom Watjen in conjunction with the board of directors sets the overall strategic direction and objectives of the company and develops an operating strategy to fulfill those objectives. In addition he establishes short-term and long-term business and financial plans strategies and policies to meet the objectives of shareholders employees customers brokers and other stakeholders. Mr. Watjen is responsible directly or indirectly for all operations of the company.
Mr. Watjen joined Provident in July 1994 as executive vice president and chief financial officer. In March 1997 he was named vice chairman and director of Provident Companies Inc. In June 1999 he became executive vice president finance and risk management of the UnumProvident Corp. and in May 2002 Mr. Watjen was named vice chairman and chief operating officer and elected to the board of directors. In April of 2003 Mr. Watjen acted as the interim president and chief executive officer and on Sept. 29 2003 he was officially named president and chief executive officer.
Prior to joining Provident Mr. Watjen was a managing director at the investment-banking firm of Morgan Stanley and Co. He also worked as a partner with Conning & Co. and in the corporate finance areas of Aetna Life and Casualty.
In 2005 Mr. Watjen joined The Financial Services Roundtable and in 2004 was elected to the Board of Directors for America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). He has been a member of the VMI Foundation since 2003.
Mr. Watjen attended the Virginia Military Institute where he earned a bachelor's in economics in 1976. In 1981 he earned his master's in business administration from the Darden School at the University of Virginia. |
