For more than 30 years, Tom Walsh has practiced civil litigation, specializing in appellate advocacy in state and federal courts. He has successfully handled hundreds of summary judgments and appeals in various areas, including landmark decisions in the area of employment law. He has represented clients in eight cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in scores of appeals before the federal courts in the Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, Tenth, Eleventh and District of Columbia Circuits, and in a number of state courts.
Tom is a member of the Memphis, Tennessee, and American Bar Associations and is AV® Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He belongs to the Appellate Practice and Labor and Employment Law sections of the American Bar Association. Professionally, for a number of years he served as a hearing officer for the Tennessee Supreme Court's Board of Professional Responsibility and also served as a volunteer on the Memphis Bar Association's Pro Bono Panel for Senior Citizens. He has received recognition for his volunteer leadership in various church and civic organizations, including the Mid-South Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the PTA, the World Affairs Council of Memphis, and as a charter member of the National Civil Rights Museum. He has also held various offices with the Yale Club of Memphis.
For three years (2002-2005) Tom served as an adjunct professor in legal research and writing at the University of Memphis Law School and has taught a number of seminars on legal writing for attorneys and judges. Tom has co-authored several publications, one of which - "Cutting Through the ADA Employment Fog: Supreme Court Helps Define Who is Covered," 35 Tennessee Bar Journal 18 (December 1999) - won the 1999 Justice Joe W. Henry Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, awarded by the Tennessee Bar Association.
