Working primarily with academic institutions and our nation's largest Children's Hospital Medical Centers, Tom's work at Huron has included providing interim staffing support, conducting economic development assessments, conducting comprehensive research compliance reviews, and assisting with national compliance accreditations. Reviewed sponsored award set-ups, budget set-ups and modifications, financial reports, invoices, cost transfers, and closeout reports.
Performed assessments and recommended changes to billing, financial reporting, accounts receivable and other select business processes used in a post award research accounting offices.
Identified opportunities to improve cost-reimbursement related to both direct and indirect costs charged to sponsored awards.
Assisted in performing assessments of the financial, management and research compliance risks of institutions.

At Emory University School of Medicine's Office of Research, Tom had responsibility for planning, developing, and implementing research initiatives in support of basic, clinical, and translational health research missions. In this role at Emory, Tom:
Coordinated the planning, development, and implementation plan for the school's newest 5-year research strategic plan.
Led the development of the Clinical Trials Office.
Assisted in overseeing the university IRB's for human subjects research, IACUC, animal resources advisory council and Dean's research advisory committee.
Managed the assignment and use of all research spaces in the school of medicine to ensure efficient utilization.
Co-directed the development of a web-based grants and space management software program for the Health Sciences Center.
Served as the Dean's liaison to the University pre-award, post-award, and federal research regulatory assurance and compliance offices.
While at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Tom served as the regional administrative principal for affairs at four academic research institutions located in the Southwest. He established the operational, strategic and financial goals supporting medical research objectives for a staff of 204 employees and 24 biomedical research faculty members. In addition to his field office experiences, at HHMI's headquarter-based Office of Science and Research Administration, he helped establish the organizational design, administrative operating policies, and priorities for 53 nationwide locations.
