Thomas Johnson was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chesapeake Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Johnson joined Chesapeake in 1997 as President and CEO and was named Chairman in 2000, titles he held until 2005. Chesapeake Corporation is a leading international supplier of specialty paperboard and plastic packaging. Its customers include premier multinational companies serving high-growth markets such as pharmaceutical and healthcare, and international premium branded products. Chesapeake has more than 50 locations in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia.
Prior to joining Chesapeake, Mr. Johnson served eight years as President and CEO of Riverwood International Corporation, an integrated forest products company. From 1976 to 1989, he held a number of management and executive positions with Mead Corporation.
During his career, Mr. Johnson has managed joint ventures and international subsidiaries in Europe, South America and Asia-Pacific. In 1996, he was named a member of the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Graduates of The Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1999, the State Bureau of Foreign Experts, People’s Republic of China, awarded him with the Marco Polo Award for his work in support of U.S. trade and business development in China.
He previously served as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy and is a Vietnam veteran.
Mr. Johnson was elected to Mirant's Board of Directors in 2006.
