Thomas A. Hawthorne, P.E., serves as VDOT's Richmond District administrator, responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operations programs in 14 counties and eight urban localities.
The Richmond District, located in central Virginia, employs approximately 1,200 and maintains approximately 9,100 miles of roadway.
After graduating with a B.S. in civil engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, Hawthorne began his career with VDOT in 1976 as an engineering trainee.
In 1980, he was promoted to assistant resident engineer in Rocky Mount, where he served until being promoted to resident engineer in Sandston in 1987.
There, he supervised construction and maintenance operations in Henrico, New Kent and Charles City counties. He oversaw the construction of the Robert E. Lee, Edward E. Willey and the Varina-Enon bridges.
Hawthorne was promoted to district maintenance engineer in 1992 and has served as district administrator since 1999.
He is also a graduate of AASHTO's National Transportation Leadership Institute.

He resides in Henrico County with his wife, Kim, and their four children. |
