Thomas A. Gerke is General Counsel and External Affairs of Embarq Corporation. This new NYSE-listed company has approximately 20,000 employees and operates in 18 states offering voice, data, high speed internet, wireless and entertainment services to over 5 million customers.
In his position, Gerke is responsible for the oversight of EMBARQ's legal and governmental affairs initiatives, corporate governance and legal support to EMBARQ's board of directors. Previously, Gerke served a similar role at Sprint.
Prior to this, Gerke served as vice president of Business Development, Strategic Planning and Alliances for Sprint's Global Markets Group.
Gerke joined Sprint in October 1994 as a senior attorney. Subsequently, he held other senior management positions in legal, including assistant vice president of Corporate Transactions, vice president of General Business and Technology, and Corporate Secretary and Associate General Counsel for Sprint Corporation.
Before joining Sprint, Gerke was a partner with the law firm of Smith, Gill, Fisher & Butts in Kansas City.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri at Columbia, a master's degree in Business Administration from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri, and a law degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
