Tetsuo Onikura was born on May 25, 1947 in Chigasaki, Japan. He majored in Semiconductor Physics at Yokohama National University and gained a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970.
He began his career developing transistor and diode devices at NEC Corporation in Japan. Then from 1983, as a Planning Manager of NEC's Marketing Division, he took charge of marketing research, business planning, sales strategy and sales support. From 1991, Tetsuo Onikura took on various managerial positions within the Sales Division, and in 1998, he was promoted to General Manager, with responsibility for sales activities to computer and peripheral markets. In 2001, he became head of the Semiconductor Marketing Division, with full responsibility for marketing activities for the Semiconductor Group.
In November 2002, Tetsuo Onikura joined STMicroelectronics as Vice President in charge of sales. He has been working energetically toward consolidating the Company's sales framework in Japan and during his first year at ST has already contributed to increasing billings for the Japan Region by 23% in 2003 compared to the previous year. He has reinforced the distributor sales network and is moving ahead with the development of a sales strategy to optimize the Japanese market.
In April 2004, Tetsuo Onikura was appointed Corporate Vice President for STMicroelectronics' Japan region and President of STMicroelectronics K.K.
Tetsuo Onikura is a highly respected industry figure and a leading authority on the Japanese market. He was Chairman of the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Corporation-Japan (WSTS-Japan) from 1986 to 1988, and Vice Chairman of WSTS worldwide from 1988 to 1989. He has cumulated a wide range of experience through involvement in other endeavors, such as Committee Chairman for the Ministry of International Trade and Industry's Analysis Team for Reducing Trade Friction Related to Joint Japanese and American Work. In addition, he served as a part-time lecturer at the Graduate School of Economics in Osaka City University.
