With an extensive background in football and advanced experience in business, Terry Tumey enters his third season as the director of football administration. Prior to serving as the department’s director, he was the assistant director of football administration for the previous two years. Tumey is responsible for planning and managing the finances for the football administration department, including the scouting and coaching budgets, training room, video department, equipment room, strength and conditioning, travel and training camp. He also assists in contract negotiations and works with the management team with respect to the salary cap and compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. He is also a key liaison with the groups that comprise the NFL Management Council. Tumey is responsible for the coordination of the team’s general football activities from inter-club communication to league-level issues such as the coordination of NFL Europe and non-player football contracts. After spending two years as a personnel assistant (2001-02) with the 49ers evaluating talent and scouting opponents, Tumey was elevated to assistant director of football administration in March, 2003. Tumey’s experience in business is substantial, having worked as senior associate for Coopers & Lybrand (1993-94) where he analyzed and advised on corporate relocation strategies among many other duties. He served as a capital planning manager for Panda Management Company in Pasadena (1994-95), developing marketing plans and analyzing the viability of potential restaurant sites.
From 1988-90, Tumey gained experience in real estate as an assistant project manager for Griffin Homes in Calabasas (1988-89) and as project manager with Crescent Bay Company in Santa Monica (1989-90).
Prior to coming to San Francisco in 2001, Tumey spent two years as a defensive assistant coach (1999-00) for the Denver Broncos. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, UCLA, in 1992 and later joined the Bruins staff full-time in 1995, serving as the defensive line coach for four years (1995-98). A three-time All-Pacific-10 first-team choice as a nose guard at UCLA (1985-87), Tumey helped the Bruins win four bowl games, compile a record of 36-10-2 and finish ranked in the top-10 three times during his four-year career. Tumey earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988 and returned to UCLA’s Andersen School of Business where he received a master’s in business administration in 1993.
