Sylvia Zurlo is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Boston office. She is a member of the Environmental Practice Group, where she practices in the areas of international law and environmental law.
In her environmental practice, Sylvia advises U.S. and multinational corporations on a wide variety of environmental regulatory compliance and litigation matters, including those that arise from contaminated river and bay sediments. She counsels clients involved in complex litigation regarding issues of environmental liability, structuring and negotiating insurance coverage and products, as well as corporate and governmental environmental policy. Sylvia also counsels clients on natural resource damage claims involving federal, state and tribal trustees and has participated in mediations with governmental parties and trustees on all issues relating to natural resource damages, including issues of injury estimations, damage calculations, restoration issues and ascertaining the legal sufficiency of claims against her clients. Sylvia works closely with scientific and technical experts to help advocate positions for her clients regarding the methodologies available in order to settle claims. Sylvia also advocates client positions on both legal and scientific issues regarding the allocation and cost-attribution of remedial efforts to other responsible parties, the fate and transport of contaminants, and the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of various alternatives for managing remediation and restoration alternatives.
In her international practice, Sylvia advises multinational corporations and private individuals in a number of areas including acquiring works of fine art, navigating cultural patrimony issues, using the U.S. Alien Tort Claims Act to bring claims in the U.S. court system for torts occurring on foreign soil, and bringing claims under Bilateral Investment Treaties. Her experience with the acquisition of works of fine art includes investigating title, negotiating sale terms, and arranging for insurance and transport of fine works throughout the world.
While attending law school, Sylvia served as a member of The Annual Review of Banking Law.
Sylvia is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She is a member of the Boston Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association.
