Dr. Susan Steele offers 30 years of higher education experience as an administrator and educator. During her career, Dr. Steele has served in a variety of administrative positions. She has been provost of the Defense Language Institute (CA), vice provost at the University of Connecticut, and associate vice president at the University of Arizona. At these institutions, she created successful undergraduate advising structures, enhanced and strengthened faculty development, managed large growth in student enrollment and faculty members, oversaw major curricular changes, and built connections within the minority community.
She has also been a teacher and researcher in the field of linguistics. Dr. Steele served as director of graduate studies at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Arizona, building a support structure for graduate students. She has also held faculty and visiting positions at colleges and universities in the United States and Europe. She is currently a research associate at the Linguistics Research Center, University of California, Santa Cruz.
Publications and education: Dr. Steele is author and editor of numerous articles and books, including Language, Sex and Gender in Comparative Perspective (1987) and Cognition and Representation (1988). She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego. |
