A leading theorist in complexity science since the early 1980’s, Stuart Kauffman was a founding scientist of the Santa Fe Institute and a consultant to Los Alamos National Laboratory, where significant early work on "chaos theory" was conducted. Stuart is a MacArthur Fellow and an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and is the inventor of the NK Model of rugged fitness landscapes, which are random networks representing many business and biological systems and exhibiting a kind of self-organization termed as "order for free." He is also the author of several highly regarded books on complexity science, including At Home in the Universe and Investigations.
In 1996, in conjunction with the Center for Business Innovation of Ernst & Young, Stuart founded BiosGroup to commercialize the business applications of complexity science. His vision of the company as a center of scientific innovation, as well as a software development firm, led to the company’s growth to more than 60 corporate and government clients, as well as strategic investments from Ford Motor Company, Ernst and Young, and Proctor and Gamble. In February of 2003, BiosGroup was acquired by NuTech Solutions.
Stuart Kauffman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth college; a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oxford University; and a Doctor in Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of California. |
