Experience:
Steven Selsberg focuses on litigation and dispute resolution, often representing entities from Mexico and other Latin American countries when sued in the United States. For example, he has represented Grupo Carso, Telefonos de Mexico, America Movil, Condumex, Grupo Sanborns, Banco Inbursa, and their affiliates in numerous litigation matters throughout the United States. He also has represented Cardinal Norberto Rivera in clergy litigation in Los Angeles.
He has been named a Texas Super Lawyer on multiple occasions (2004, 2005 and 2006). Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Steven served as a Judicial Law Clerk to The Honorable James DeAnda, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas (1986-1988). He also worked in the Office of the General Counsel to the Secretary of Defense, United States Department of Defense, The Pentagon (summer, 1985).
Notable Engagements:
Headed an appellate team that reversed a $454 million Dallas jury verdict against Carlos Slim Helu, Grupo Sanborns and Grupo Carso arising out of their acquisition of CompUSA.
Represented Cardinal Norberto Rivera in clergy litigation in Los Angeles.
Drafted briefs and argued on appeal the affirmances of several trial court judgments for Philip Morris Inc. (Linda Faye Stewart, et al v. Philip Morris Incorporated, Case No. 98-3661, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit (statute of limitations and preemption; Jo A. Harris, et al. v. Philip Morris Incorporated, No. 00-40252, United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (Texas Product Liability Act); Hughes v. Tobacco Institute, et al., Cause No. 00-40658, United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (Texas Product Liability Act and constitutionality); Cole, et al. v. R.J.
