Steven Shindler serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NII Holdings, Inc. providing strategic direction and leadership to the company. Shindler and the dedicated team of professionals which he assembled successfully transformed NII Holdings from a start-up operation to a leading wireless provider with some of the best financial metrics in the Latin America region. NII has over 2.7 million subscribers and leads the entire industry in all operational metrics.
Shindler is very proud of the many achievements of the company including Nextel Mexico being recognized as the number one wireless provider in Latin America by Pyramid Research and Nextel Argentina being given the National Quality Award (the equivalent of the Malcolm Baldridge Award).
The solid performance of NII Holdings under Shindler’s tenure has merited industry-wide recognition. In 2004, the company received the Stevie Award from the International Business Awards for Best Corporate Turnaround and it was ranked #26 in Business Week’s InfoTech 100. In 2005, NII was added to the NASDAQ 100 index based on the company’s strong growth and rapid increase in market capitalization. His exceptional leadership has also warranted accolades from leading international institutions. He was recently honored with the Bravo Business Award for International CEO of the Year by Latin Trade, one of the most important magazines in Latin America. He also has received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Greater Washington Area for best Business Transformation. Shindler is always looking ahead toward maximizing the opportunity and the long term value of NII for all stakeholders.
Shindler joined Nextel Communications in 1996 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, a position he held until November 2000. In March 2000, he was named Chief Executive Officer for Nextel International Inc. (now NII Holdings). Prior to joining Nextel Communications, he served as Managing Director of Communications Finance at the Toronto Dominion Bank, one of the largest suppliers of capital to the wireless community.
Shindler is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, and received a Masters degree in Business Administration from Cornell University.
He resides in Great Falls, Virginia with his wife, Mary Kay, and his three children.
