Steve practices in the area of federal and state taxation, educational and charitable organizations and trade associations and other types of non-profit organizations. Steve joined the firm in 2007.
Steve has practiced in the area of tax-exempt entities, including educational and charitable organizations, hospitals, other health care providers, schools, churches, social clubs, trade associations and political action committees. Steve has assisted these organizations with their tax planning, charitable and planned giving initiatives, and fund-raising opportunities. He has also represented many taxpayers in the handling of tax controversies with the Internal Revenue Service and various state taxing agencies and the U.S. Tax Court, and appeals therefrom.
Steve has experience in all areas of tax planning for tax-exempt entities. This includes planning for the unrelated business income tax, treatment of advertising income and royalties, private foundation and public charity excise tax planning and executive compensation matters. He also has experience in structuring affiliated groups of tax-exempt entities as well as the contracting issues that may arise with third parties. Charitable giving has also been an important focus of his practice. Naming rights in particular have been a focus of Steve's charitable giving practice from the donor side.
He also has extensive experience in representing candidates for elective office at the federal, state and local levels as well as candidate political committees and independent political committees. Issue-oriented committees are also a part of the political process. Organizations have also employed Steve to assist with compliance with the many laws regarding lobbying and lobbyists themselves.
Recent federal tax legislation has dramatically impacted the tax-exempt community. Steve is available to consult with organizations on these recent legislative developments.
Steve received his J.D. from Wake Forest University and his LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University. |
