Steve Zimmerman has more than 25 years of senior- and executive-level experience in the field of international development. An accountant and economist by training, he has a strong financial management background and has been instrumental in developing several Mercy Corps core program competencies, including its economic development portfolio.
Zimmerman joined Mercy Corps in 1997 as its first Chief Operating Officer, dividing his time between the institutional development of Mercy Corps and the design and implementation of its worldwide programs. In 2003, he moved to Mongolia as Country Director, doubling the size of the program in less than one year and pioneering new development strategies focused on improving the rural economy. Two years later, in 2005, he assumed responsibility for Mercy Corps' China program as well. Zimmerman returning to Portland in September 2006 to assume his current post, in which he manages the agency's worldwide Program Operations.
Prior to joining Mercy Corps, Zimmerman was the Chief Financial Officer for a large HIV-AIDS project in New York City. He has worked for a number of recognized international NGOs, including Save the Children, AFS Intercultural Programs, and Catholic Relief Services. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California. |
