Keeping the Nuggets in top physical shape is the job of Steve Hess, the team’s strength and conditioning coach. He oversees the team’s weight training, conditioning, stretching and nutritional programs. Hess designed and arranged the Nuggets’ sparkling new weightroom in the Pepsi Center. He also designed functional pieces unique to the Denver Nuggets.
In his ninth season with the Nuggets, Hess creates and administers individual workout programs for each player throughout the entire year. He spends the majority of the off-season working with the Nuggets players as well as other professional athletes, overseeing every aspect of their workout programs. He pushes them to reach their peak physical condition.
Hess came to the Nuggets from Greenwood Athletic Club in Greenwood Village, Colo., where he was the director of personal training. In that role, he was responsible for the entire fitness regimen for the personal training department and a staff of 25 personal trainers. Hess had worked at the health club since ‘94.
Hess is a spokesman for Eating for Life and Makota. He is one of the few conditioning experts to have an endorsement contract with these companies. In addition, Hess has had much television experience and has been featured on NBA Inside Stuff and on The Eating Network. He also has his own workout segment on the Altitude Sports and Entertainment Network.
A graduate of Ithaca College (N.Y.), Hess received a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis on sports medicine and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science fitness and cardiac rehabilitation in ‘91.
Hess lives to obtain peak performance in his own life. His wife, Alicia, is also a conditioning expert and the couple spends their time chasing their two sons, Jordan and Korey, around their home.
