Experience:
Steve is a member of Mayer Brown's Supreme Court and Appellate practice, which both Legal 500 United States and Chambers USA 2007 ranked as the top appellate practice in the country. He has argued appeals before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and DC Circuits as well as the Illinois Appellate Court, and has briefed many more in state and federal appellate courts across the country. In the United States Supreme Court, Steve recently worked on what The Wall Street Journal called "the biggest securities-litigation court clash in a generation" (Stoneridge v. Scientific-Atlanta); the largest private antitrust case in history (Credit Suisse v. Billing); and the leading case addressing the scienter standard under the federal securities laws (Tellabs v. Makor Issues & Rights). The Court agreed with our position in each case.
Steve also has a great deal of experience in the trial courts, where he focuses on discovery issues, brief-writing, and counseling clients about case strategy. He has extensive experience with class certification issues, having defended against putative class actions alleging consumer fraud, employment discrimination, and securities fraud. In addition, he has lectured on the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005. Steve also has substantial experience in products liability litigation, having represented defendants in asbestos, medical device, tobacco, and welding fume lawsuits. Additional areas include the attorney-client privilege; business torts; common law and contractual indemnity; contractual disputes; Daubert challenges to expert testimony; enforcement of arbitration agreements; fiduciary duties; medical monitoring; punitive damages; and removal issues.
Steve is a magna cum laude graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as an editor on the Georgetown Law Journal. Before joining Mayer Brown in 2001, he clerked for Judge Frank J. Magill of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
