Stanford is a partner in the real estate department. His practice focuses on environmental matters, including litigation and controversy matters, and environmental aspects of real estate and business transactions. Stanford routinely negotiates with state and federal environmental agencies on behalf of private parties, handles administrative appeals, and oversees environmental due diligence and clean up activities. Prior to joining the firm, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Samuel G. Wilson, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, 1995-1996.
Representative Matters
Advised a publicly traded real estate development company regarding the purchase and development of a former Superfund site. Handled due diligence matters, and worked with environmental engineers and government agencies regarding investigation, remediation, and liability issues.
Advised land owners and real estate developers regarding wetlands, permitted stream and surface waters buffers, as well as floodplain and watershed protection rules limiting development.
Litigated claims of owners of contaminated property against prior owners and defended claims of adjacent property owner regarding migration of contamination.
Advised national lending institution regarding claims of state and federal environmental agencies against collateral securing debt.
Oversaw environmental due diligence for acquisition of specialty wood products manufacturer by investment fund, and negotiated environmental terms of stock purchase agreement and lending documents.
