Sidney Taurel has been chairman of the board of directors of Eli Lilly and Company since January 1 1999. He was chief executive officer from July 1998 until March 31 2008.
Born a Spanish citizen in Casablanca Morocco Taurel became an American citizen in November 1995. After graduating from École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Paris France in 1969 he received a master of business administration degree from Columbia University in 1971.
Taurel joined the Lilly subsidiary Eli Lilly International Corporation in 1971 as a marketing associate. After marketing and sales assignments in São Paulo Vienna and Paris he became general manager of the company's affiliate in Brazil in 1981 and was appointed to the London-based position of vice president of Lilly European operations in 1983. He was named executive vice president of Eli Lilly and Company and president of its pharmaceutical division in 1993. Three years later he was promoted to president and chief operating officer.
Taurel is a member of the boards of IBM Corporation and the McGraw-Hill Companies. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Business Council and he is a member of the board of overseers of the Columbia Business School and a trustee at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Taurel received three Presidential appointments: to the Homeland Security Advisory Council (2002-2003) the President's Export Council (2003-2006) and the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations (since 2007). He is an officer of the French Legion of Honor.
